La Catrina Exterior
La Catrina will open between Sherwin Williams and Iz Cafe in English Village.
La Catrina in English Village is hosting a mariachi band and holding drink specials to celebrate its official grand opening celebration Wednesday, June 3. The restaurant opened last fall.
The band and half price drink specials begin at 5 p.m., and a ribbon cutting will be held at 5:30 p.m.
Mayor Terry Oden, city council members and the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce will be attending.
Owner Toshimi Hira hopes to share the Mexico he knows, not just the one portrayed in Tex-Mex cuisine. The country’s authentic cuisine merges indigenous foods with European influence. That means the menu boasts salads, pastas, breads and Spanish-Mediterranean spices in additional to traditional entrées.
“I want to blend what people already know with new things,” Hira said, “and to separate [La Catrina] from the McDonald’s of Mexican food.”
