Dr. Holly Gunn of Gunn Dermatology says being a physician was her “childhood dream.”
A Mobile native, Gunn knew from the age of 5 she wanted to help other people. And early on, she developed a specific vision of her future.
“The doctors I looked up to as a child were in mom-and-pop offices helping people feel better,” she said.
Gunn now has her own office in Crestline Village, which she opened in August.
“We’re a small neighborhood practice that gets to know our patients so we can address their needs,” she said. “This is living out my dream.”
Gunn Dermatology offers medical, pediatric, surgical and cosmetic dermatology with a facial spa and skincare shop.
“I love all aspects of dermatology because we get to make people look and feel better,” Gunn said. "We provide solutions to all your skin health and skincare needs, and we strive to make all of our patients and clients feel appreciated."
Gunn is adept at treating most skin ailments, including acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and signs of aging.
“I do everything that makes the skin feel and look better and actually become healthier,” she said.
She also helps patients who have disfiguring scars due to acne, skin-cancer removal or genetic conditions, and this is about more than just improving their appearance.
“I've had so many patients improve their lives by becoming more confident after cosmetic treatments or getting their skin condition under control,” Gunn said. “Some of these patients are given the confidence to change careers or get a job they really want. I want to be a helper that makes other people's dreams come true.”
Gunn is also working to establish a nonprofit fund to help patients with scarring get the help they need.
After earning a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Maryland in 2003 and completing medical school at the University of South Alabama in 2007, Gunn completed an internal medicine internship, research fellowship and dermatology residency at Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center.
Also at Penn State, Gunn earned a master’s degree in public health sciences and wrote a book to help parents protect their children from the sun.
“I’m passionate about skin cancer prevention,” she said.
Prior to opening Gunn Dermatology, Gunn worked in private practice and, before that, served as medical director of the UAB Dermatology Cosmetic and Laser Clinic.
She lives in Mountain Brook with her husband Stephen and their four daughters and loves the community.
“I want Gunn Dermatology to be part of Mountain Brook and have a warm, friendly feeling,” she said.
“Give us a call to book an appointment today,” she said. “We strive to make everyone have a great experience.”
The practice also follows strict COVID-19 protocols, with information on the website.
“I want this to be a pleasant, safe place for our staff and patients,” Gunn said.
