Walk into Gunn Dermatology and you’ll notice right away that it is a unique and innovative practice.
Dr. Holly Gunn, who opened the practice in August 2020, said a common statement she hears from her patients is, “No one has ever suggested that before.”
“We love that we’re different from most of the dermatology offices in Birmingham,” Dr. Gunn said. “Even though I’m from Alabama, I trained in Pennsylvania with additional training in Chicago, California and New York.”
This experience has made Dr. Gunn an expert in diagnosing and treating skin conditions, performing cosmetic treatments, detecting skin cancers, and working with people of all ages, including children.
“I do everything that makes the skin feel and look better and actually become healthier,” she said.
She also helps patients who have disfiguring scars due to acne, skin-cancer removal or genetic conditions, and this is about more than just improving their appearance.
“I've had so many patients improve their lives by becoming more confident after cosmetic treatments or getting their skin condition under control,” Gunn said. “Some of these patients are given the confidence to change careers or get a job they really want. I want to be a helper that makes other people's dreams come true.”
Dr. Gunn is the daughter of an engineer and an artist. You wouldn’t expect someone growing up in that family to become a doctor, but Dr. Gunn always knew she wanted to help people. She looked up to the mom-and-pop doctors’ offices and admired their passion for healing people.
Now that she owns a small neighborhood practice in Mountain Brook, the same city she lives in, she’s living out her dream, she said.
“I wanted to create an environment where people enjoyed coming to work, a place where people enjoy taking care of others,” she said. “I wanted a place where our patients and clients felt that they were appreciated and taken care of as well. I couldn't find that elsewhere here, so I created Gunn Dermatology.”
Dr. Gunn hadn’t ever owned her own business before, though, so opening during the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge.
“Everyday is a learning experience,” she said. “We are constantly getting better at what and how we take care of ourselves and patients here.”
Dr. Gunn’s vision is that Gunn Dermatology will be recognized as innovative, high-quality medical and aesthetic dermatologic care.
“We strive to set a new standard for delivering compassionate, respectful and responsive patient care,” she said.
Dr. Gunn is also working to establish a nonprofit fund to help patients with scarring get the help they need.
“Give us a call to book an appointment today,” she said. “We strive to make everyone have a great experience.”
