In the MBPD community update from Oct. 13, police reported multiple thefts. One victim reported on Oct. 6, she received a call during which she was asked to send money to the Dominican Republic in order to bail her grandson out of jail. She sent money, and police report this is a very common scam.
“If someone calls and asks you to send money, please contact us,” the community update said. “We will be happy to help sort through the situation.”
Once money leaves the country, police said, there is little they can do.
Other thefts included clothes that were shoplifted from a store in Brookwood Village on Oct. 8, and a pair of eyeglass frames shoplifted from a store on U.S. 280.
Another victim reported receiving a call on Oct. 7. The call was from a collections agent who said a loan taken out from Check N Go had not been paid, but the victim had not taken out a loan, according to the update. Police identified this incident as identity theft.
Two hit and runs were reported, including a Hyundai Sante Fe that backed into a patrol car on Cahaba Road and fled the scene. The officer saw the incident and caught the suspect. The other hit and run occurred on U.S. 280 on Oct. 6.
A car break-in reportedly occurred between Oct. 9 and 10. A camera and sunglasses were taken from an unlocked car.
Another victim reported being harassed through messages on Facebook messaging between Dec. 28 and Oct. 8.
