Mountain Brook police are alerting residents to a potential scam.
In this week’s community update, police said phone calls and emails asking you to send money “due to an alleged violation of the law or to keep you from being arrested” are likely scams.
“We are not aware of any agency which will contact you in this manner,” police said in the community update.
If someone receives such a call or email and want to check if it is legitimate, MBPD suggested looking up the phone number for the agency and contacting it directly — not using the number provided by the unsolicited contact.
Police also reported multiple property thefts in this week’s update.
Between Nov. 24 and Nov. 30, two trailers in the 300 block of Overbrook Road were broken into and construction and lawn equipment was stolen.
Between Nov. 27 and Nov. 29, a license plate was stolen off a car in the 3500 block of Westbury Road.
Jewelry and cash were taken from a residence in the 3300 block of E. Briarcliff Road between Nov. 12 and Nov. 26.
A few businesses reported thefts as well. At Brookwood Village, two instances of shoplifting were reporter — one on Dec. 1, and the other on Dec. 2. Clothing was also reported stolen after it was taken from a dry cleaner drop box in the 100 block of Lane Parke Road. This theft occurred between Nov. 16 and Nov. 17.
A victim of identity theft reported someone opened three credit accounts in their name between Nov. 7 and Nov. 30. Another identity theft victim reported someone took out a loan in their name on Nov. 27.
A car was also reported stolen, according to this week’s community update. The car was parked in the 4000 block of Royal Oak Court and taken between Nov. 24 and Nov. 25. The car was recovered on Nov. 26 on 27th Street in Ensley and had no apparent damage.
