Mountain Brook rode a hot start to a big victory over Vestavia Hills, 63-23, on Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 7A, Area 6 Tournament, held at Mountain Brook High School.
The top-seeded Lady Spartans were a perfect 6-0 in area play to earn the right to host the tournament, and will advance to play Hewitt-Trussville on Friday night at 7 p.m., after the Lady Huskies upset No. 2 Spain Park in the first game of the evening.
Kate Bumgarner hit a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter, as Mountain Brook jumped out to a 19-6 advantage.
The second period turned into a free-throw fest for the Lady Spartans, as they knocked down seven of the ten shots they took from the charity stripe, and led 31-11 at the break.
Senior standout Jessica Compton played her final game for the Lady Rebels, as she scored four points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Taylor Wilson led Vestavia Hills with eight points.
Sara Carr scored five baskets in the third quarter, notching 11 of her game-high 17 points as Mountain Brook extended its lead to 53-20.
Whitton Bumgarner put up five points in the final period. Hannah Bartels ended the night with 12, and Lacey Jeffcoat scored seven.
Grace Uldrich had four points for the Lady Rebels, and Merritt Cahoon added three.
