Mountain Brook High School's football team wasted little time turning its season opener into a rout, scoring the game's first 40 points en route to a 60-18 win over Hueytown on Friday night.
John Colvin accounted for four total touchdowns, three on the ground and one through the air, as the Spartans piled up 394 yards of total offense.
Mountain Brook set the tone immediately, with Colvin scoring on a 9-yard run and a two-point conversion making it 8-0 less than three minutes in. A blocked punt recovered in the end zone by Miller Lee pushed the lead to 16-0, and William Russ added a 37-yard field goal before Colvin's second touchdown run, a 3-yarder, made it 26-0 after one quarter.
"We got some momentum, got up three scores just based on some special teams miscues to begin with, and it got a little bit out of hand," Mountain Brook head coach Chris Yeager said.
The Spartans kept the pressure on in the second quarter. Quarterback Caden Bryant found Brock Wilkinson for a 37-yard touchdown, Colvin scored his third rushing touchdown from 5 yards out, and quarterback Pruet James connected with Colvin on a 26-yard touchdown pass to make it 47-0 before Hueytown got on the board. Legend McMiller's 13-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Averhart was the Golden Gophers' first score, cutting it to 47-6 at the half.
Colvin finished with 159 yards on 22 carries to go with his three rushing scores, adding the 26-yard touchdown catch for good measure. Yeager credited more than measurables for what makes Colvin so effective. Colvin has been primarily used at receiver the last couple years in the Spartans offense.
"You don't measure heart with a tape measure. You don't measure it with a scale," Yeager said, pointing out that Mountain Brook has backs both faster and bigger than Colvin. "You got to have heart, and you got to have brains. And John's got them both."
"I like as the game goes on, we go to the tent, we watch film, we see what the defense does, and we adjust, and that's really how we become a good team in the long run," Colvin said.
James finished 7-of-10 passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns, also hitting Archie Andrews for a 34-yard score in the third quarter that made it 54-12. Robinson Peer capped the Spartans' scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
Yeager also credited his team's completeness on both sides of the ball, as the defense played well.
"I thought they just played lights out," Yeager said of the defense. "They played hungry, they played fierce and wanted to."
Mountain Brook, now 1-0, travels to UMS-Wright next week.
