Hewitt-Trussville upset No. 2 Spain Park on Tuesday night with a blistering second half and used the same recipe to defeat top-seeded Mountain Brook, 56-51, in the Class 7A, Area 6 Tournament championship game on Friday night.
The Lady Spartans were in control at halftime, with a 36-26 lead, but the Hewitt-Trussville defense stepped up in the second half, holding Mountain Brook to just nine and six points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Sara Carr got Mountain Brook off to a solid start, scoring five of her eight points in the first quarter, as the Lady Spartans jumped out to a 20-10 lead. Hannah Bartels knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter.
Walker Poe kept the Lady Spartans afloat in the third quarter, as she scored half of her 12 points.
But tournament MVP Morgan Kirk stepped up, scoring 18 points on the night. London Coleman added 13, with eight coming in the third quarter.
Janie Branch ended up with nine points for Mountain Brook. Gabby Hill scored eight for Hewitt-Trussville.
Despite the loss, Mountain Brook will move on to the state playoffs in the Regional round at Jacksonville State University. The Lady Spartans will play Buckhorn Thursday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m.
