Talk to address the new face of substance abuse

Aware will host a Town Talk on "The New Face Of Substance Abuse" on April 29 from 6-7 p.m. at the Emmet O'Neal Library. A question and answer session with follow the talk.

David Murphree, MA, ALC will speak from a professional perspective and Edward Holloway from a personal one.

David Murphree currently works at Samaritan Counseling Centers in Birmingham and specializes in addiction, alcohol / substance abuse and emotional disturbances as well as a broad range of mental illness.  Murphree will discuss signs of abuse including abuse that parents may be unaware of and what it may be masking.  He will shed light on the fact that prescription drug abuse is currently the most popular among young people.

Ed Holloway, 44, is married to Dawn and is a father of two children:  Maggie, 14 and Matt, 11.  The Holloways lost their oldest son Will in September 2012 from an accidental drug overdose.  Will was 15 years old and a sophomore at Mountain Brook High School.  The Holloways are both graduates of Mountain Brook High School and Holloway is an Auburn University graduate in Mechanical Engineering.  He will discuss his family’s personal experience with substance abuse that led to the tragic loss of their son.
