Butterfly Education and Awareness Day coming to botanical gardens

Birmingham Botanical Gardens will present Butterfly Education and Awareness Day on June 13 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The day is dedicated to the welfare of butterflies through conservation, research and promotion of butterfly gardening and butterfly farmers.

The Birmingham Zoo and McWane Science Center will host children’s activities throughout the event. Butterfly released are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Verna Gates will tell butterfly lore, legends and stories of monarch butterflies while leading Hikes for Tykes, hosted by Fresh Air Family. The hike is designed for preschool children and begins at 10 a.m.

Sara Bright and Paulette Ogard, co-authors of Butterflies of Alabama: Glimpses Into Their Lives, will present a family-oriented presentation of native butterflies and how they can be protected.

BBG is working with Birmingham Zoo, Ruffner Mountain, Alabama Wildlife Center and McWane Science Center to bring this event to the public.
