Birmingham Zoo to offer half-price admission in exchange for canned goods donation

by

The Birmingham Zoo is asking for the public’s help in ensuring those in need are also able to enjoy the holiday season. Zoo visitors are asked to bring any canned or non-perishable food item with them on Saturday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 22.

The items will then be donated to the United Way Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, which secures and stores surplus food and household items to distribute through local partnering service agencies.

In exchange for their donation, visitors will be able to enjoy half-price admission during the collection weekend. Guests who donate a food item will pay $7.50 (plus tax) for adults, $5 (plus tax) for senior citizens 65 years and older, and $5 (plus tax) for children 2-12 years old. Children under two receive free admission.

According to a Birmingham Zoo news release, visitors should bring one item per person to receive the discount.

“The Birmingham Zoo strives to give back to the community,” said Dr. William Foster, Birmingham Zoo President and CEO according to the release. “The annual United Way Food Drive is just one way that the Zoo is able to support the community that does so much to support the Zoo.”
