City of Mountain Brook declares curfew beginning Monday night

The Mountain Brook City Council met in a special session on Monday, June 1, at 3 p.m. and imposed a curfew in the city beginning that night and effective until further notice.

The original time range for the curfew was 7 p.m. until 6 a.m.

However, on Wednesday, June 3, the Council held another special called meeting and changed the time of the curfew. It is now in effect from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Changes hereafter may be made by either the Mayor or City Manager as conditions warrant.

The city's action comes after disturbances in downtown Birmingham Sunday night following a peaceful protest of the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man, by Minneapolis police last week

There are some exceptions, or permissible reasons for persons being out during curfew hours, according to the release.

These include the search for medical assistance, food or other commodities or services necessary to sustain the well-being of people or their families; traveling through the city to another location outside of the city; or returning from work.

UPDATE: June 4, 2020, 11:15 a.m.—This post was updated to include the change in time for the curfew as approved by the Council on June 3.
