Construction projects may affect local travel

A few construction projects may affect travel in the Mountain Brook area this week.

Country Club Road from Montclair Road to Ridge Drive will be closed in order to replace a storm drain. The project involves replacing 80 feet of a storm sewer pipe, said Public Works Director Ronnie Vaughn. Vaughn said the old pipe was made of clay and had a section which had collapsed.

Work started on Monday, but the crew was only able to move in equipment and saw asphalt in preparation for work on Tuesday. The crew will begin digging at 8 a.m., and the road should be reopen that night, with steel plates covering the opening.

Vaughn said the work on Country Club Road should be done by Thursday.

Traffic light loops are also being installed along Montevallo Road. The loops help with timing of the traffic lights, Vaughn said, and need to be replaced after repaving that occurred earlier this summer.

"It helps traffic flow better and helps control the light," Vaughn said.

Crews installed a traffic light loop at the intersection of Montevallo Road and Church Street on Monday, and Vaughn said work should be completed by Wednesday or Thursday. During the installation, drivers may face a delay.

"They'll be delayed a little bit," Vaughn said. "In most cases, we have a police officer with them to direct the traffic."
