The fate of a proposed Piggly Wiggly in Crestline Village could be decided Monday night.

The council will hold a public hearing to consider rezoning parcels along Vine Street for the proposed development Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at City Hall in Crestline Village.

The council chambers were filled to capacity, overfilling its 120 seats, when the rezoning came before the planning commission on Nov. 3. The commission approved the plans 4-3 after a controversial discussion. [Click to see a full report from the planning commission meeting.]

Council president Virginia Smith said all of the current council members sat in on the planning commission hearing and found it helpful to hear the presentations from the developer, traffic consultants and residents.

“I was pleased the planning commission voted as they did even with the caveat of closing Vine Street, and I know they listened to the residents and had done their homework,” Smith said.

At the Nov. 24 meeting, Smith said the council will hear presentations.

“Unless there are a lot of changes in the negative, I suspect someone will call it for a vote,” Smith said. “It may not get a second, but I know all the council members have done their own homework.”

The council looked at holding the hearing at Mountain Brook Junior High and Crestline Elementary, but there were scheduling conflicts at both schools. Smith noted that the council chambers could fill to capacity again.
