May crime report
Week ending May 17
This past week we experienced no home burglaries and three UBEVs (Unlawful Breaking and Entering Vehicles).
The UBEV occurred on Office Park Drive between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on May 10. The vehicle was not locked and numerous credit cards were taken along with cash.
The second UBEV occurred on Caldwell Mill Lane during the night on May 15. The victim left her vehicle unlocked. Credit cards and cash were taken from this vehicle.
The third UBEV occurred during the early morning hours on May 16. The passenger window on her vehicle was broken and her purse was stolen. A wallet, credit card, cash and a checkbook were also taken. We found blood on the broken window. I would anticipate that a DNA report will probably result in a future arrest.
We are still getting reports of coyotes in the city. I received an email yesterday from a lady who encountered a coyote on South Brookwood Road about 10 days ago. She said he was walking down the street like he was a Mountain Brook resident. He was totally unafraid and did not move until she stomped her feet at him. Another call came in yesterday that a coyote was in a yard on Rockhill Road.
Copperheads continue to be a concern. We seem to have an abundance of copperheads. A child was bitten by a copperhead on Cherry Street in Crestline about 11 days ago. He suffered a painful bite and spent a few days in the hospital. He is fine now and has a great story to tell his friends. The snake bit him when he was retrieving a ball that had landed in some ivy. Be careful.
Miscellaneous incidents:
On May 11 at approximately 10:45 p.m., we received a call that a gunshot was heard in the Macy’s lot at Brookwood Mall. When officers arrived, they encountered a male wearing a hoodie who matched the description of the individual with a gun. Apparently, the young man had a loaded .22 caliber pistol, and he accidently discharged it. That bullet ended up in his foot, and after being treated by our paramedics, he was transported to the hospital. He was charged with “carrying a gun without a license” and “reckless endangerment.”
On May 11 we took a report of a “hit and run” on Highway 280. According to the victim, a white male driving a blue Saturn struck her vehicle and left the scene. All we have is a tag number starting with 58.
On May 13 at 5:15 a.m., a resident on Fredericksburg Drive woke up and went downstairs to find a white male asleep on his couch. The resident called the police and when they arrived they confronted the sleeping suspect. He was intoxicated and had apparently entered the home during the night. He was charged with “criminal trespass” and “criminal mischief.” This subject is a teenager who lives in our city. It appears that he entered this house due to his drunken stupor. Fortunately, no one was injured.
A white male opened an account at Iberia bank. After opening the account, he proceeded to deposit bad checks to and write bad checks on his new account. He has been identified and warrants are in his future. This subject is from Odenville, Alabama.
We received a domestic incident call. A couple in the middle of a divorce was involved in an argument, and the wife called the police. No police action was necessary.
Week ending May 10

Miscellaneous incidents:
We took a report from a woman who lost $4500 to an internet scam. She was attempting to get thousands more from her bank to send to the thieves, but an alert bank employee stopped that transaction. People don’t give away millions of dollars. That $4500 is gone! It is somewhere in Nigeria, Jamaica or some other foreign country.
A thief or thieves broke into Highlands Day School on Old Leeds Road between 8:30 p.m.on May 7 and 6 a.m. on May 8. Nineteen laptops were taken. Our detectives have already made an arrest and more arrests may be coming.
A hit and run accident occurred at the Piggly Wiggly in River Run. There was minor damage to the victim’s vehicle and a witness provided a tag number. This case will be solved.
The glass on a storm door on Richmar Drive was shattered by an unknown object. We have not determined what kind of object it was or if it was an intentional act.
We had a domestic dispute call on Euclid Avenue, but no police action was necessary. A wife’s friend intervened in an argument with a woman and her husband.
One of our patrol officers on night shift stopped and arrested two white males from North Carolina. These individuals were heavily armed, and we believe that their presence in this area indicated that their intention may have been to inflict harm on some unknown person. I believe that this officer may have stopped (at least temporarily) someone from being a victim. We will probably never know what this officer prevented.
Week ending May 3
This past week we experienced no home burglaries and one UBEV (Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle).
The UBEV occurred at the intersection of Overbrook Road and Beechwood Road on May 1 between 9 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. The car was parked there while the victim went for a jog. The victim’s purse was located where it could be seen from outside the vehicle. A window was broken, and the purse and its contents were stolen. That UBEV would not have occurred if the thief had been unable to see the purse inside the locked car.
We are getting emails about rumors that the “Irish Travelers” are in our area. From what I understand, the chief of a neighboring city stated that this is the time of the year that these “Travelers” may be in the area. However, we have no indication that the “Travelers” or other gypsies are in our area at this time. For those who aren’t familiar with the Travelers, they are involved with paving scams and other unethical activities. They are professional thieves.
Miscellaneous incidents:
We received a domestic call when a mother reported that her son had thrown an object and broken a window while in a rage. The son’s father came and took him home with him.
There was a criminal mischief report taken on Beech Circle...
The resident had a rock thrown through his window and received multiple harassing messages on his cell phone. The suspect is a former work associate of the victim. Our officer talked to this subject and informed him that he could be arrested if he sends any text messages or calls the victim.
A resident on East Briarcliff Road had his laptop stolen. He isn’t sure if it was stolen here or in Atlanta. (Update: It has been determined that the laptop was stolen in Atlanta.)
An open house party occurred on April 27 on Montclair Road. At least one individual was arrested for “minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage.” The police were called to that location by neighbors. The officers discovered that several teenagers were at the party, and there was alcohol involved. The parents of the teenagers were called to pick up their children. Although the parents were not at home, they will be cited because this party occurred at their home.
Week ending April 26
This past week we experienced no home burglaries and no UBEVs (Unlawful Breaking and Entering Vehicles).
We have received inquiries from people in other cities about how we are keeping our crime down, and I am convinced it is because the people in our community are working to keep it down. Thanks to all of you who are keeping your alarms set, watching out for your neighbors or doing other things to increase the vigilance of our people in this community. It seems to be working.
Miscellaneous incidents:
We had a theft report from Locksley Drive where jewelry was taken. We know who has been in the house and are hopeful that an arrest can be made. (Update: Our detectives obtained a warrant for a relative and recovered all the jewelry.)
We had an identity theft case where a 13 year old had his social security number stolen.
An unknown individual took an athletic bag located at the high school. The bag contained an iPhone. (This case has been closed as the bag and its contents were returned to the victim. Evidently, it was taken by mistake.)
An 88-year-old victim was contacted by phone and told that her grandson was in jail in Peru and he needed $2400 to get out. She went to her bank, withdrew the money and sent it to Peru. This was obviously a scam, and our victim lost her money.
A wreck with serious injuries occurred on US 280 at Rocky Ridge Road on Saturday morning. Our detectives have obtained an assault warrant in connection with this case.
Someone broke the glass on the front door of the Shell Station on Overton Road and entered the business. It occurred during the early morning hours of April 22. The thief took cigars, cigarettes and other items.
A theft occurred at a residence on Pump House Road. The thief took a television and two briefcases. The items were taken by an individual who has been in the house since the owner died.
An identity case report was taken from a woman who had recently visited Texas. It appears that while in Texas her identity was stolen, and accounts were opened in her name.
