Flower magazine editor to speak at AWARE program

Margot Shaw, editor and publisher of Flower magazine, will speak about her experience with substance abuse and mental illness at the Crestline Field bleachers on April 21 at 6 p.m.

Shaw will serve as the spring speaker for AWARE, an organization formed in Mountain Brook dedicated to discussing suicide and other mental health issues.

"She says talking about the substance abuse is easy, every celebrity wears the rehab stories on the sleeve," AWARE member Billy Bromberg said. "It’s mental illness that no one is willing to talk about because of every reason that immediately comes to mind, it’s a risky proposition. Her experiences are real, but unfortunately not unique. She is willing and thankfully more than able to relate them in the hope of helping those who need a visual of success and overcoming adversity."

Shaw founded Flower after working to plan her daughter's at-home wedding. Originally filled with floral, garden and event design, the publication has gradually broadened to include content on interiors, art, travel, fashion, jewelry and entertaining.
