Friday marks the 20th anniversary of Sam Gaston’s tenure as Mountain Brook’s city manager.

“I have the best city manager job in the nation,” Gaston said. “It has gone by fast. It’s a pleasure to work with such talented department heads. Our mayor and Council have been gracious to me over the years. I have been able to work with great people to keep Mountain Brook as one of the premiere cities in the South.”

Gaston runs the day-to-day operations of the city government, working with department heads, the City Council and the mayor to make sure ordinances and policies are carried out.

In his role for the city, Gaston also prepares the city’s budget and submits it to the council for approval. Outside of his role as city manager, Gaston, who grew up in Russellville, serves as a board member of the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce and on the Mountain Brook Planning Commission.

The Auburn graduate also served as president of the Homewood/Mountain Brook Kiwanis Club and president of the International City City-County Management Association.

Prior to his appointment in Mountain Brook, he served as City Manager of Powder Springs, Georgia and held municipal positions in Anniston, Gulf Shores and Decatur.

“This city is a special place, and I get to work with some great people to keep it that way,” Gaston said.
