Highlands School in Mountain Brook announced this afternoon that it will be dismissing students at 2 p.m. today and cancelling all after school activities due to the predictions of cold temperatures and snow.

In an email to parents, Assistant Head of School Robert McGehee said after school activities and practices are all canceled this afternoon and evening.

The decision on whether to hold scheduled basketball games on Saturday will be made later today, he said.

Previously, Highlands had planned to remain open until 3 p.m., but changed its plans as weather forecasts changed as well.

"Due to a shift in the current weather models, announcements by other schools in the area, we have made the decision to close school at 2:00 today," Assistant Head of School Robert McGehee said in the email. "Our hope is that by closing early we will give parents, students, faculty and staff time to drive home safely."

Other schools in the area, including those in Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills, have also cancelled after school activities.
