Crime Report January 26
Another great week with no home burglaries and no UBEVs.
In the past 5 weeks we have experienced 1 home burglary. In the same period a year ago we experienced 10 home burglaries.
In the past 5 weeks we have experienced 5 UBEVs (Unlawful Breaking and Entering Vehicles). In the same period a year ago we experienced 15 UBEVs.
Below is a summary of miscellaneous incidents:
We had a theft case where the victim had argued with his boyfriend and he suspects that the boyfriend stole his laptop.
There was a theft case on Cromwell Drive . The victim stated that she last saw her silverware on Thanksgiving Day. Numerous workers have been in the house since that day.
A lady was notified that she had won $450,000 in a sweepstakes, but she needed to send the company $4,500 to cover insurance for the winnings. She went to the bank and withdrew the $4,500 to send to the company. Fortunately she realized that she may be the victim of a scam and did not send the money.
There was a domestic situation when an intoxicated father got into a shoving and grabbing match with his wife and his son. He was arrested.
A husband and wife argued about a mother-in-law and the husband tried to leave. The wife blocked the door and would not let him leave. The police arrived and determined that there was no violence. No police action was taken.
We had an identity theft case. A citizen reported that he lost his wallet at Eastwood Mall or Crestline Village . He was notified that someone has already used one of his credit cards. The card was used at a service station in Eastlake .
A mother attempted to take a phone from her teenage son. There was an argument and the teenager called the police. The teenager stated that his mother was swinging at him and his brother while using profanity. The officer who answered the call determined that the teenager making the call should go stay with his grandfather and he did.
We had a harassing communications report this past week. The victim in this case has received obscene and threatening text messages from a man she knows.
A woman reported that her ex husband has been sending her harassing text messages where he curses her and calls her names.
Report for January 19
There was one home burglary this past week and no UBEVs (Unlawful Breaking and Entering Vehicles). This was another pretty good week.
The home burglary occurred on Hampshire Drive between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM on 1-13-12. The thief pried and entered a window located towards the rear of the home. He took a laptop, jewelry, a television and other items. There was no alarm.
We believe that a white male driving a small red pickup may have been involved.
For the past 4 months our burglaries have been about ½ the number of burglaries we experienced during the same period a year before.
Below is a summary of miscellaneous incidents:
There was a hit and run accident on US 280. A vehicle was hit from behind at a traffic light and the suspect vehicle pulled up alongside the struck vehicle. The driver of the suspect vehicle stated that there was no damage and drove away. There was damage and the tag number the victim remembered was not correct.
There was a domestic situation when an intoxicated mother and her teenage son had a verbal altercation that turned nasty when the mother ordered her son to get off the computer. The son refused and the mother destroyed the monitor. The teenager called the police and after the police defused the situation the son left to go stay with his father.
We had a theft case on Westbury Road where a housekeeper who had worked for the victim several years brought her boyfriend to work with her. The victim was upstairs and the boyfriend stole silver from her home. The victim checked her silver after the two had left and discovered the missing items. The thief has admitted taking the silver. The moral of this story is to beware of employees, even if they are honest employees, bringing other people into your home.
We arrested an individual for public intoxication when he wouldn’t leave his friend’s home. She met him earlier that evening at a bar and she accompanied him to several other bars before they went to her residence. By then he was very intoxicated. She realized she had made a bad decision when he started acting weird. She called the police and he went to jail.
A young lady left her Ipod on a bench outside Macy’s. When she discovered that she had left it on the bench, she returned, but it was gone.
We had one identity theft case where a thief used the victim’s information to charge an online purchase to the victim’s bank account.
We had a theft case where jewelry was stolen from our victim’s closet. The only person with access to the home during the period in question was the housekeeper.
A woman met a man and he started pursuing her. She was not interested and she expressed this to him. He was unable to accept this rejection and his obsession led him to start making harassing phone calls. He has been contacted by one of our detective s.
An unknown thief broke into a storage building at the Thornhill Road apartments and took numerous lawn equipment tools and machines.
A woman is convinced that she lost an expensive earring at a local restaurant. So far it has not been located.
Report for the week ending January 12
There were no home burglaries this past week and two UBEVs (Unlawful Breaking and Entering Vehicles).
This was another great week!
The 1st UBEV occurred on Caldwell Mill Road between January 5 and January 9. A thief entered the victim’s vehicle and took a Garmin gps. The vehicle was not locked.
The 2nd UBEV occurred on Caldwell Mill Trace between January 5 and January 9. A thief entered the victim’s vehicle and took an Ipod and a gps. The vehicle was not locked.
Below is a summary of miscellaneous incidents:
There was a hit and run accident on Montevallo Road . A large Penske truck struck a mailbox and left the scene. The victim shouted at the driver, but the driver ignored the victim’s demand to stop. The victim did not get a tag number.
There was a domestic situation when a couple argued over money. She stated he grabbed her around her neck. He stated that she attacked him and he pushed her. She had red marks on her neck and he went to jail.
At Country Club Park a woman was struck with a rock thrown by a teenager. The young white male ran towards Piggly Wiggly and was not located. The woman was not injured.
Two black females from Birmingham were caught shoplifting at the Rite Aid pharmacy. They were arrested.
Three teenagers were caught drinking vodka and whiskey while parked at the Cherokee Bend Elementary School. They were underage, and they were arrested for being in possession of alcoholic beverages.
We had one identity theft case where a thief used the victim’s information to charge an online purchae to his bank account.
Report for the week ending January 5
There were no home burglaries this past week and two UBEVs (Unlawful Breaking and Entering Vehicles).
This was another very good week with no home burglaries.
A UBEV occurred on Little River Road between December 24 and December 28. A thief entered the victim’s vehicle, but nothing was taken. The vehicle was not locked.
Another UBEV occurred on Little River Road between December 23 and December 29. A thief entered the victim’s vehicle and took an Ipod. The vehicle was not locked.
Below is a summary of miscellaneous incidents:
A box of letters was stolen from Brookwood Forest School . The box contains letters that are used on the exterior notification boards. These letters are very important to the school and the school authorities have asked that we put this out with a request from our citizens to help recover these letters. Please contact us or Brookwood Forest School if you have any information. A six foot ladder and other items were also taken.
There was a hit and run accident on Winston Way involving a parked vehicle. There were no witnesses.
We had a domestic situation involving an irate son cursing his father.
There was a hit and run accident on Fairway Drive involving a parked vehicle. There were no witnesses.
There was a criminal mischief case on Gerald Way where a drunk and belligerent friend of the victim damaged the victim’s home.
A drunk teenager committed the act of criminal mischief by damaging a neighbor’s home on Dunbarton Drive .
We had a case of harassing communications when a man called a woman and left profane messages on her voice messaging system.
There was a case of criminal mischief on Kingshill Road when a windshield was broken on a parked vehicle.
There was a criminal mischief case on Oak Canyon Drive where some individual drained the victim’s swimming pool.
There was a criminal mischief case on Valley Head Road involving a parked vehicle. A side mirror was damaged.
We had a theft case where checks were written on the victim’s account without his knowledge. The account had been closed out several months ago, but there is a chance that the thief gained possession of an old checkbook.
There was a hit and run incident on Montclair Road. A car swerved into another vehicle causing minor damage and continued towards Birmingham without stopping.
There was a criminal mischief case in Crestline. The victim was out of town and had people tending to her animals and home. When she returned, her home had suffered severe damage. This may have been the result of an intoxicated house sitter.
Report for the week ending December 29
There were no UBEVs or home burglaries this past week and that made it a very good week for us. Looking at the stats it appears that we had a good year.
Our major issues with UBEVs and home burglaries are down about 50% as compared to the same period in 2010.
Below is a summary of miscellaneous incidents:
There was a hit and run accident ear the pizza restaurant on Dexter Avenue ninvolving a parked vehicle. Minor damage and no injuries.
A domestic incident occurred this past week. It involved 2 males (roommates) in an argument over a pie. One of the males cut the wrong pie. There was no violence and no police action was necessary.
There was a hit and run accident on Heathermoor Road involving a parked vehicle. Minor damage and no injuries.
A check was forged and cashed at a bank.
A house fire occurred on Sterlingwood Drive on December 19 and it has been determined to be a case of arson. The same house burned on December 22.
We had a case of identity theft this past week where a church credit card was used.
Report for the week ending December 22
This past week we had one home burglary reported and three UBEVs reported (Unlawful Breaking and Entering Vehicles).
On December 16, the thief entered a vacant home and took copper and a generator. There was no sign of forced entry and the home owner was not sure if the doors to this house were locked.
We had an attempted burglary on Thornhill Road at the apartments. Three white males pried the victim’s door, but ran when they heard the victim inside the apartment. The victim recognized one of the white males.
The 1st and 2nd UBEVs occurred on Forest Glen Drive during the night of December 14. There was an Ipod taken from each of these vehicles. The vehicles were not locked.
The 3rd UBEV occurred on Culver Road between 1:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. on December 20. A purse and credit cards were taken from this vehicle. It was not locked.
Below is a summary of miscellaneous incidents:
On December 16 at approximately 2 p.m. a white male described as being heavy set driving a white Honda with silver stripes exposed himself to two juvenile females. This incident occurred at the intersection of Dexter Avenue and Cherry Street .
There was a hit and run accident on Delmar Terrace, but the accident was witnessed and the offender has been identified.
A motorcycle was stolen on Randolph Place during the night of December 19.
There was an open house party involving marijuana and alcohol this past week while parents were out of town. Several individuals under 21 were involved.
An individual was arrested for selling magazines without a business license on Montevallo Lane .
A man parked his vehicle at the Shell Station on Overton Road, and while it was parked a thief removed the catalytic converter.
Another catalytic converter was taken from a vehicle while parked at the library on December 14 between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Update: Samford University officers captured 2 white males stealing catalytic converters from vehicles on December 14.
A shoplifter was arrested at Macy’s after the loss prevention associates observed her stealing clothes.
We had a case of identity theft this past week where several gift cards were bought using the victim’s name.
Macy’s had a “snatch and grab” case where three black males grabbed a number of blue jeans and ran from the store.
A woman’s credit card information was used to charge items in London, England.
There was a hit and run accident on U.S. 280. A woman’s vehicle was hit in the rear and the suspect left the scene. No were no injuries.
A woman discovered that her vehicle had minor damage resulting from a hit and run accident at Brookwood Mall.
