Police report suspect in car break-in captured by VHPD

A suspect in an April 14 car break-in has been captured by Vestavia Hills Police Department, according to Mountain Brook Police Department.

On April 14 around 12:30 a.m., an unlocked car and truck in the 2700 block of Cherokee Road were entered unlawfully, according to a report, and a checkbook was stolen.

The resident whose vehicles were entered captured surveillance video of the suspect and passed those along to police. The suspect had a beard and tattoo on his left forearm, according to police, and drove away in a GMC or Chevrolet standard cab with a long bed pickup.

The suspect was captured by VHPD in connection to another incident, and MBPD have obtained warrants, according to the April 21 community update.

Police also reported five hit and runs between April 15 and April 19. On April 15, a driver on U.S. 280 reportedly sideswiped another vehicle and left the scene. The driver of the offending vehicle was reportedly seen texting.

Also on April 15, a vehicle parked in the 2800 block of Thornhill Road was hit by another vehicle that left the scene, according to the report. Another vehicle parked in the 2000 block of Cahaba road was hit on April 19, and the offender left the scene.

A Kia Sedona parked at MBHS was struck on April 16, according to police, and the offending vehicle left red paint marks and left the scene.

The fifth hit and run reportedly occurred on April 17. A gray Audi hit a BMW on U.S. 280 at Cherokee Road and failed to stop, according to the update.

Several property thefts were also reported in the community update.

Property thefts included two shirts that were shoplifted from Brookwood Village on April 14 and three orange stakes that were stolen from a yard in the 3700 block of Forest Run Road between April 17 or 18.

On April 16, a white male and white female reportedly left a restaurant in the 2800 block of Cahaba Road without paying. The two individuals ate dinner and waited at the cash register for several minutes before leaving without paying, according to the report. This was classified as theft of property in the update.

Two property thefts included possession of a forged instrument. On April 15, two suspects reportedly went to a business on Shades Creek Property and cashed two forged checks. One successfully cashed a check and left, and the other individual was arrested.

On March 28, a white male reportedly cashed a forged check at a bank on Office Park Drive.

Other reports in the community update included:

An instance of harassment in which a resident reported receiving a threatening phone call from someone he does not know. The calls occurred between April 12 and April 13.

An older dump truck was reported stolen from the 2800 block of Thornhill Road. The theft occurred on April 15.

A suspect fled from officers on April 18 through the Crestline area, and officers did not continue to pursue the suspect. The suspect reportedly hit a vehicle in Birmingham PD’s jurisdiction. The offender has reportedly been identified and warrants are pending.

An individual in the 2800 block of Cahaba Village Plaza was found in possession of marijuana. Police discovered the marijuana after responding to a domestic incident on April 18, according to the report.

On April 20, police pulled over a car on U.S. 280 at Briarglen Drive. Neither occupant had a license, and one of the occupants had outstanding warrants. Police also reportedly found both occupants were in possession of drug paraphernalia.
