Police to offer course on identity theft prevention

Mountain Brook police announced plans to offer a brief course in identity theft prevention in this week’s community update.

The course will be offered on Feb. 2 and Feb. 18 at 6 p.m., and it will cover how to prevent and deal with identity theft. The course will be taught at the Mountain Brook Board of Education building at 32 Vine Street.

There were also three reports of identity theft included in the Jan. 7 community update.

One victim reported their debit card was used between Dec. 23 and Dec. 31 at an ATM in New York. Another victim reported someone made unauthorized charges on a Regions Bank debit card between January and November of last year.

In the third instance of identity theft, someone took out a payday loan in the victim’s name between Dec. 1 and Jan. 4.

Police also reported three car break-ins in the community update. All three occurred overnight between Jan. 5 and Jan. 6.

Two cars parked in the 800 block of Beech Court had their windows broken, and a briefcase, computers, sunglasses, a passport and checkbook were stolen.

Another car was burglarized in a driveway in the 1000 block of Sims Avenue. The car was unlocked, and a radar detector, credit card and key fob were stolen.

Two thefts were also reported in the update, including a scooter stolen from the 2500 block of Beverly Drive between Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 and an instance of shoplifting in the 2800 block of Cahaba Village on Jan. 6.
