Susan G. Baker to speak at Saint Luke’s

Susan G. Baker, founding member of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, will speak at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church on Wednesday, June 12. The public is invited to attend.

At 7 a.m. Baker will speak on “Everything You Wish Your Wife Would Tell You” for a Men’s Bible Study and Breakfast. At 11:45 a.m. she will speak on forgiveness at a Women’s Luncheon, which costs $6. For a luncheon reservation, contact Julia Willcox at 970-0867 or juliakwillcox@gmail.com.

A co-chairman of the Alliance, which began around her dining table in 1983, Baker, along with the organization, works to investigate and implement those programs and policies that provide long-term solutions to this national crisis.

In the past, Baker has served as a board member of Families for the Homeless, a bipartisan group of concerned families with ties to presidential administrations, Congress and the media. This organization produced a museum-quality photographic exhibition that was made into the book, Homeless in America. It also created an educational video to help the public understand the tragedy of homelessness.

Baker has also served on the board of the Houston-based Neighborhood Centers, Inc. and the advisory board of the Houston Food Bank. She also has been a board member of the Enterprise Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists the creation of low-income housing.

As a founding member of the Parents’ Music Resource Center, Baker worked to educate parents and teachers on the explicit and violent content of some rock music lyrics. This bipartisan group succeeded in getting the major recording companies to voluntarily label violent and sexually-explicit music for concerned parents and consumers.

Baker was one of five organizers for a Gathering of Friends, an ecumenical conference held in the Holy Land over Christmas 1999 to celebrate the 2000th birthday of Jesus of Nazareth. It focused on forgiveness and reconciliation issues.

She lives in Houston with her husband, James A. Baker, III, 61st U.S. Secretary of State. They are the parents of eight children and the grandparents of 17. Baker’s autobiography, Passing It On, was released September 2010.
