Victim in I-459 crash identified as Mountain Brook resident

Authorities identified the victim who died after crashing into an 18-wheeler on I-459 as Mountain Brook resident Carey Elton Howard, 64.

Police received the call about the accident around 12:53 p.m. on Thursday. The 18-wheeler was parked near mile marker 2.8 on I-459 southbound in Bessemer. Howard was the only occupant in a Chevy Trailblazer which crashed into the rear of the 18-wheeler, said Bessemer Police Deputy Chief Mike Roper.

Howard was pronounced dead on scene.

An investigation to determine the cause of the crash is underway, Roper said. There were no skid marks or immediate indications of the cause of the crash, he said.
