Woman charged with two counts of attempted murder

A 47-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of attempted murder. Mountain Brook resident Angela Hontzas was arrested in the 3400 block of Oak Canyon Drive on Oct. 30 after she attacked her parents, according to Mountain Brook Police.

Police received an open 911 call, meaning a call was made from the residence but the caller did not say anything to dispatch, around 4:07 p.m. on Oct. 30, said MBPD Chief Ted Cook. As officers were being dispatched, a second call was made to police. Hontzas had stabbed her two parents, both of whom are in their 80s, multiple times, according to police.

She was arrested on scene and warrants charging her with attempted murder were obtained. Hontzas’ total bond was set at $250,000, and she was booked into Jefferson County Jail on Nov. 1, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Search.

The elderly couple was taken to a local hospital following the incident, and Cook said they are still being treated but he is unsure of their status.

In the police department’s Nov. 3 community update, multiple burglaries were also reported.

On Nov. 1, three burglaries were reported to police. One resident reported she left her home on Country Club Road for about 10 minutes and returned to find her back doors had been kicked open. Nothing was reported taken, according to the update.

On Dell Road, someone reportedly forced entry into a home through the back doors and took jewelry. On Old Leeds Road, another home was entered and a credit card was taken. The card was used multiple times, according to the report.

Multiple thefts were also reported, including a ring and change stolen from a home on Cahaba Road, a utility trailer taken from a side yard, a DVD player that was shoplifted from a store on Culver Road, an attempted shoplifting in a store on Country Club Park, and three instances of shoplifting at Brookwood Village. In two shoplifting instances, the suspects were caught by store security. On Oct. 28, two women reportedly shoplifted clothing and jewelry from a store in Brookwood Village, and both women were caught by store security. On Oct. 29, an individual reportedly took eight containers of fragrance from a store and was caught by store security.

Police also reported two instances of possession of a forged instrument. On Oct. 25, a known individual reportedly presented and cashed a forged check he received after selling his vehicle on the “Let Go” app, an app which allows users to post photos of and sell items. On Oct. 28, an individual presented a forged check to be cashed and was arrested.

Multiple crimes were reported following traffic stops. On Oct. 25, police found the occupant of a vehicle was wanted out of St. Louis, Missouri following a traffic stop. On Oct. 28, police pulled over a car on Round Forest Drive and reportedly found an individual in possession of marijuana. On Oct. 29, an officer pulled over a vehicle in the parking lot of the Wendy’s on U.S. 280, and the driver reportedly fled the vehicle once it stopped. The driver left his wallet and ID in the car, according to police. On Oct. 30, police pulled over a vehicle and found an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, according to the report.

Other reports included an instance of harassment when an officer investigating a domestic violence call was struck by an individual, an instance of criminal mischief when a car window was busted on Oct. 31, an instance of identity theft and a report of assault. Five hit and runs were also reported.
