The official kickoff of the college football season may be Aug. 27, but for football fans who can’t wait to start bragging about their teams, the fun can start a week earlier.

Fans can chalk up their first tailgate of the season at the eighth annual Boiling ’n Bragging event, at Otey’s Tavern in Crestline Village on Aug. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m.

“The eighth annual Boiling ’n Bragging event is a great kickoff to football season,” said Shelly McCarty, community development coordinator for Children’s of Alabama, the organization the event benefits. “This year’s event will feature wonderful silent auction items, a delicious shrimp boil, and cornhole boards. We invite everyone to attend wearing their team colors.”

Boiling ’n Bragging features a shrimp boil and the opportunity for fans to brag about their favorite teams. McCarty said she expects more than 600 to attend. Schools participating include Auburn University, Florida State University, Georgia Tech, Louisiana State University, Texas A&M University, Troy University, the University of Alabama, the University of Georgia and the University of Missouri, with more expected, McCarty said.

Entertainment will feature Lance Taylor and Rockstar from WJOX’s Roundtable. One-dollar drink specials will be available for the adults, and activities will be available for the kids. Attendees should sport their team’s colors. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Children 10 and younger are free. The party benefits the critical care transport program at Children’s of Alabama, which works to meet the specific need of transporting more than 1,000 critically ill and injured children each year. It serves as a mobile extension of the hospital. Team members include registered nurses and respiratory therapists.

“We are thrilled about this partnership and couldn’t be more excited about this event,” said transport coordinator and registered nurse Jason Peterson. “It’s a great opportunity for people in the community to not only come together to celebrate the start of football season but to also make a great impact on our program and the children we serve.”
