On Sunday, July 24 Canterbury United Methodist Church will be hosting two unique events set to offer a chance to see the world in a different light.

The Crawford Owen Sunday School class has arranged for “An Overview of the Islamic Faith” to be presented by Ashfaq Taufique, President of the Birmingham Islamic Society. Later that same morning, a special “Lunar Communion” will be held during worship with special guest and retired astronaut, Dr. Jan Davis, to commemorate the little-known communion service that was held on the moon shortly after the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969. Dr. Davis will also share her own experiences of viewing earth from the vantage point of the Space Shuttle.

Ashfaq Taufique, President of the Birmingham Islamic Society and longtime friend of Canterbury, will be speaking at a special combined Sunday school meeting. Lunar Communion

Sunday, July 24, 10:30 a.m. in Canterbury’s Sanctuary

Canterbury will celebrate a very special "Lunar Communion" during worship on Sunday, July 24. Retired astronaut, Dr. Jan Davis, will be there to commemorate a private historic moment on July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin offered a prayer and shared communion shortly after landing on the surface of the moon. Dr. Davis will tell everyone more about it, as well as her experiences viewing our planet from space.
