Original Piggly Wiggly "Arrelia" painting for sale

Artist Liz Landgren has completed a new painting entitled "Arrelia" of the check-out counter at Crestline Piggly Wiggly.

Landgren, who grew up shopping at the Crestline Pig, presented it to longtime employee Arrelia on Oct. 2 in a moment that was met with many tears.

"When I think about the Pig, I think about Arrelia," Landgren said. "This is not a Pig painting. It's an Arrelia painting."

The artist is sold 100 8x10-inch prints of the painting for $25 each and is giving a portion of the proceeds to Arrelia and friends.

The original painting was sold and is being donated to the Emmet O'Neal Library.

Originally Landgren said she painted the scene based on what she remembered from the store from growing up, but she returned and took a photo of Arrelia and updated the painting accordingly.

Arrelia is depicted at the center, and Roderick on the left. Many people have asked her if the woman buying groceries is Landgren, but she said it depicts a typical Mountain Brook mom and her kids (although Landgren's son does play #8, she noted). On the right is what she said is a typical high school or college student who works there.
