CBS fourth grade goes to the State Capitol

The fourth grade at Cherokee Bend Elementary spent April 5 in Montgomery visiting several historical landmarks and state government buildings.

The Alabama State House was their first stop, where they were welcomed by Representative David Faulkner, and the students voted on a mock bill. The students took group tours at their next two stops, the Governor’s Mansion followed by the State Capitol. An interim stop to Old Alabama Town was included in their day’s schedule, visiting a schoolhouse, church, cotton gin, grocery store and doctors’ office — all of which have been preserved to the experience from 1892, including a train station which was an old slave market on the Alabama River. Their final stop was the Archives and History Museum. The museum featured exhibits in a timeline from the time of Indians to present day. This day trip was the perfect culmination of the children’s units in Alabama history.
