The sixth-grade Chief Hands Committee at Cherokee Bend Elementary worked feverishly to promote “Socktober,” its outreach project that was originally derived from Kid President. Socktober is a way to help people in need during the winter months by providing donated socks to homeless shelters.

Callie Davis spearheaded this student-driven project, with some help from teacher Melinda Curtis, and the idea was proposed to Principal Betsy Bell.

“This group of eight students took it by the horns and haven’t stopped yet,” Curtis said.

The students have successfully collected more than 1,000 pairs of socks, twice the amount of their goal, to be donated to the Birmingham YWCA.
