Crestline Elementary students learn about global issues

The sixth-grade PAGE students at Crestline Elementary attended the annual Junior United Nations Assembly recently at Birmingham-Southern College. 

Teams represented Switzerland and Belgium. The Switzerland team addressed the problem of child labor in the country, and the Belgium team addressed the problem of Ebola because flights connect through Brussels from Africa to other countries and Belgian native Peter Piot co-discovered the Ebola virus in the late 1970s. 

Switzerland team members Matthew Bottcher, Sally Bussian, John Decker, Laurel Hand, Nicholas Miller, Mac Swoger and Samantha Torch won Outstanding Resolution and Outstanding Costume awards. Belgium team members Margo Belden, Emma Kao, Betsy Lambert, Finn McCarthy, Gordon Sargent, Walton Redden and Walker Starling. won Honorable Mention for Best Prepared Team. Walker Starling won Honorable Mention for Outstanding Boy Delegate. The JUNA coach is Julia Peterson.
