The Mountain Brook High School Fine Arts Department is putting on a new type of concert for the community. The school’s band and choir are coming together this year for a combined Veterans Day concert.

The idea came about under the leadership of band director Jason Smith and choir director Charles Henry.

“It is a chance to do some literature that combines both instruments and choir, and it is a new thing for a lot of our students,” Henry said.

This is the first time in years that the school is attempting this form of concert, and the theme aims to honor the service veterans have provided for the United States.

“You can expect the choir to have a bit of a gospel-like sound along with some vocal jazz. Mixed in with that will be some more traditional sounding pieces,” Henry said.

Well-known songs such as “The Star Spangled Banner” will be performed along with songs audience members have never heard.

“Because it is a collaboration between a lot of talented kids, you can expect a lot of hard work to be put into making this concert great,” said tuba section leader and MBHS student Lyda McComber.

The concert will be held Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the MBHS Fine Arts Center, and admission is free. For more information, go to mtnbrook.k12.al.us/MBHS.
