Mountain Brook Debate Team finishes in top 8 at competition

Mountain Brook High School’s debate teams attended the Tournament of Champions in Lexington, Kentucky. The policy debate team finished in the top 8, their best finish to date in Policy Debate. Senior Evan McCarty placed sixth in over-all speaker.

The Tournament of Champions event hosted over 137 high schools from 30 different states, and offered four debate events; Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Congressional Debate and two speech events; Extemporaneous Speaking and Original Oratory.

Mountain Brook competed in both Lincoln-Douglas and in Policy Debate.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, senior Alex Cordover represented Mountain Brook. Cordover debated well all weekend and picked up some wins but did not advance to out-rounds.

Junior Phillipa Straus and senior Evan McCarty represented Mountain Brook in policy debate. The team finished in the top eight. Their accomplishment marks the second time in MBHS history that a debate team has advanced to the elite eight.

Senior Evan McCarty placed sixth in overall speaker. McCarty will go on to debate next year at Northwestern University, one of the premier college debate programs in the country.
