Mountain Brook Elementary School fifth graders showed their thanks for veterans during a concert on Nov. 9.

Students sang a variety of patriotic songs, ranging from “Fifty Nifty United States” to “God Bless the U.S.A.”  MBE music teacher Shari Dorsett said each year, the Salute to our Veterans performance is one of her favorites, and she thanked the fifth grade teachers at MBE for their hard work and thanked veterans for their service.

The morning opened with a slideshow presentation of photos of students’ family members who are veterans. Next, the fifth graders sang songs on their own, including a medley of service hymns. During the service hymns, all veterans in the audience were asked to come to the front of the room to receive a pen and to be recognized.

The performance closed with the singing of “God Bless America,” during which the audience was invited to join in, and a moment of silence while “Taps” played.

When students are out of school on Friday, Nov. 11, Dorsett said they will all know it is because of those who have fought for and served the United States.
