Ellen Landy, representing Mountain Brook Junior High, won the Mountain Brook District Spelling Bee on Thursday.

Landy took home the prize in the 19th round by correctly spelling “macaroni.”

Six students competed in the Bee at the Charles Mason Board of Education Building in Crestline Village, and the alternate winner was Charles Vaughan, from Cherokee Bend Elementary.

Students in fourth through eighth grades competed in classroom competitions before competing in their local school spelling bees. Those winners moved on to the district competition.

Mountain Brooks’ competition is part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which is designed to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies and develop their usage of the English language.

Landy will now move on to the Jefferson County Spelling Bee, which is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 5.
