The Mountain Brook High School football team ran to a 56-6 win over Gulf Shores on Friday night at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

“I feel like our team played extremely hard and extremely physical," Mountain Brook head coach Chris Yeager said. “If we correct our mistakes, then we have the making of a really, really good football team.”

All game, the Spartan offense ran the ball and the Dolphins seemed to have no answers. Mountain Brook (1-0) played six running backs throughout the game, and four found their way into the end zone. Sam Everette, Harold Joiner, Daniel Wilbanks and AJ Gates each scored on the night. Everette led with 18 carries for 191 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Everette had high praise for his offensive line. He said, “All the yards I gained were because of the offensive line. They did their job really well so I could do mine.”

“Our offensive line gave us a huge push so we could have the advantage in the game,” quarterback Hamp Sisson said. The junior quarterback did not have to put the ball in the air much, going 6 for 8 for 104 yards and a touchdown.

The passing touchdown was likely the key play of the game. With just 2 seconds remaining in the first half, Yeager called timeout to set up a play.

“We called four verticals and the defense flowed back with the receivers and there was a huge gap underneath for Harold," Sisson said. "So I dumped it off to him and he did the rest."

Sisson connected with Joiner for the scoring play and the Spartans entered halftime with a 28-6 lead.

With the big lead, the second units on offense and defense were allowed to play much of the second half.

Colton Yeager and Will Wetzler led the Spartans with 8 tackles each.

Next week, Mountain Brook will host Helena, while Gulf Shores (0-1) travels to Baldwin County.

“They are a huge football team and we need to stop the run against such a talented group,” Yeager said.
