Tonight, undefeated Mountain Brook takes on Vestavia Hills in the 6A Region 6 marquee matchup of the week as the league’s two best defenses square off in a game that will decide the region champion heading into the playoffs.

The Spartans (8-0, 6-0) are ranked 12th in the state and have given up only 66 points thus far. However, Vestavia’s only loss this season was to Hoover, the top-ranked team in Alabama. The Rebels (7-1, 6-0), ranked eighth in the state, gave up 35 of their 127 points allowed this season to the Buccaneers.

Questions also surround Coach Chris Yeager’s signal caller for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs, as junior quarterback Will Brewster injured his thumb in the Spartans’ game against Hewitt-Trussville on Oct. 12 and was replaced by Jacob Carroll. Carroll completed 9 of 18 for 98 yards and two touchdowns against Huffman on Oct. 19.

Village Living received a report that Brewster underwent surgery to repair his injured thumb and would not return in the 2012-2013 season. Yeager did not return a request for confirmation.

All time, Mountain Brook is 20-26 against Vestavia Hills, including the Spartans’ 28-17 win last year. Mountain Brook has reached the playoffs 21 times in 47 seasons and touts an overall record in the post season of 39-19.

Alabama High School Athletic Association Playoffs begin Nov. 9 and end Nov. 30, with the 2012 Super 6 Finals scheduled for Dec. 6-7 at Auburn University’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.
