The Mountain Brook Spartans, paced by Jonathan Eyster, captured the Class 7A state golf championship in Mobile on Tuesday.

Spain Park High School senior Patrick Martin sank six birdies and 12 pars Tuesday to close the 67th Alabama High School Athletic Association state golf tournament with a 6-under 65 to claim low medalist in the Class 7A boys’ division at Mobile’s Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove golf course.

Martin’s two-day 36-hole total of 133 beat co-runner-up Alex Green of Fairhope and Mountain Brook’s Eyster by seven strokes. Green had a 68 Tuesday to close at 140. Eyster opened with a 68 Monday but closed at 72 Tuesday for 140 total.

Eyster and his Spartans teammates won the 7A state championship with a 10-over 587 total. Mountain Brook shot 293 Monday and 294 Tuesday.

Fairhope finished second at 606, followed by McGill-Toolen at 614 and Vestavia Hills (622).

This is the second state title for MBHS coach Benny Eaves, who also led the Spartans boys to the 2011 championship. The Spartans were runners-up last year.

In all, that makes it 11 golf titles for the Spartans' boys and girls programs.
