Village Living won five awards at the Alabama Press Association's 2024 Media Awards, including a first-place award for best news feature on two Mountain Brook men who are graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point,
Village Living captured first place in the Alabama Press Association’s 2024 Media Awards competition in the news feature category.
Leah Ingram Eagle, who served as the community editor for Village Living for much of last year, won the award with a story focusing on how the lives of two Mountain Brook men were greatly impacted by their service in the U.S. Army.
In recognition of Veterans Day, Eagle shared about the lives of William “Bill” Clark and Marshall Clay. Read that story here.
Village Living also won third place for overall sports coverage among newspapers in Division E, which includes associate member newspapers and free circulation products. Village Living’s sports coverage is led by Sports Editor Kyle Parmley.
Parmley also won third place in the in-depth sports news category with his Mountain Brook High School football preview in 2023.
Photo Editor Erin Nelson Sweeney won third place for creative use of multimedia with a video and photos about the groundbreaking for renovations to the Jemison Park trail.
Contributing columnist Kari Kampakis won third place in the human interest column category for a column about needing stubborn hope in a hurting world.
Starnes Media publications, which in 2023 included Village Living, the Vestavia Voice, 280 Living, Hoover Sun, The Homewood Star and Cahaba Sun, won a total of 57 awards in this year’s APA competition.
The Redstone Rocket in Huntsville won the general excellence award for Division E, while The Birmingham Times won third place. The Redstone Rocket also won the advertising sweepstakes award.
The Alabama Press Association has four other divisions that are divided based on their number of paid subscribers.
Other first-place winners in the general excellence category were The Anniston Star, The Cullman Times, Shelby County Reporter and The Observer (in Opelika). Other advertising sweepstakes winners were The Outlook (in Alexander City), Shelby County Reporter and The Observer.
